"Geocities: The Electronic Frontier" Rating: 9 out of 10

By Bernie Frommlin
InfoMedia Film Review

Ancient Egypt, the Golden Age, and computers hidden away in a forgotten warehouse that serve as a gateway to mystery. It may sound like fiction, but Adrien LaCiel's "Geocities: The Electronic Frontier" shows us that often fact is more enthralling than fiction.

LaCiel's two-hour epic documentary on the findings of InfoCorp researchers is both thrilling and keeps you wanting more. Brilliantly directed, and even more brilliant told, "Geocities" connects the dots between images loaded onto the forever-lost Internet that paid worship to feline-kind, and the Golden Age cults that worshiped now-forgotten Egyptian goddess Bastet.

A combination of beautiful artistry, eerie stories from Geocities text stores (if "My Lost Kitty" doesn't move you to tears, nothing will) and the animated presentation of research leader Harold Liese make seeing this documentary worth the $900 price of admission.

The electronic connections also served as a gathering place for cult leaders, and show us words straight from the keyboards of those who plotted to kill Middle Eastern revolutionary princess Benazir Bhutto. This is the most interesting segment, and LaCiel wisely dedicates a full 40 minutes to the story of the plot.

The film's only flaw: Could the director's have found someone to describe the findings more bland than Mohammed Masood? This researcher, credited with the initial find, certainly deserves kudos for his work, but should never have been given time to speak in front of a camera. His pitch that Bob Marley was somehow connected to the creation of the deformeds was difficult to swallow at best given the time differential, and showed people at Masood's level require guidance by their superiors to keep their imaginations from running away from them.

Regardless, this film is a must-see for lovers of history and mystery both. It is likely to be a solid 6 months before it's available on blackchip, so see it in theaters while the opportunity lasts. Bring your kids. They may even learn something the schools don't teach.

At least this justifies Project Culture Shock, hopefully Green won't nail Mohammad as bad as the reviewer did. Although to be fair she was the one who insisted on the Bob Marley be not only retained, but emphasized. She always manages to glitch things up and have someone else take all the fall out. I swear upper management are the devil.

Erica,

I am writing to you with the most extreme urgency. We've received transmissions from a source in space. This source was on the frequency of one of Keven Treacy's transmitters.

From this source from someone calling themselves chief we've gotten a request to activate "Infocorp.Protocol.Menorah". As you know this protocol is Hazard Priority Level 3 and above, and can carry an expensive price tag. However the origin of the message is a zombie satellite in space. Which leads me to three conclusions

After having the source triangulated and traced, twice, I have drawn 3 conclusions. That either:
A) This is indeed Kevin and he needs immediate evacuation.
B) Members of Project Falling Star are playing a rather cruel practical joke that has no place in the professional climate we strive for here at Infocorp.
C) Some of our higher level hazard protocol's have been hacked and are now being used against us to reallocate resources.

I would prefer that the first be true and as required by Infocorp.protocol.menorah I am reporting this to you in order to make an executive decision on whether we will initiate a full retraction of Kevin Tracy and all of his equipment and research specimens since he has found something that Infocorp would find extremely valuable.

The mention of Antarctica is in reference to the hand written note I sent with Keven's last supply crate. Which is some validation of this transmission's authenticity.

However I fear that the second or third is more likely. But what is done, cannot be undone and this protocol request was received through secure channels that Kevin Tracy was given access to prior to his departure.

I imagine you'll want to follow up, but let me know if me or my team can be of any more assistance in this matter.

Dear Life Journal,

I must be going crazy, or the target of one the recruitment cults of Yah-Weh.  I know they target bloodline Jews, but never in my dreams would I begin to think myself to be recruited.  But everything seems to revolve around KAT.  The Ghost is yet again, all of a sudden, spouting off that KAT is alive at the same time Mohammed tells me about infocorp.protocol.menorah.  This is the protocol I designed for Hazard Level 3 assignments and above for Culture Shock about 3 or 4 years ago.  It was designed as a failsafe for automatic evacuation from a site due to deadly hazards in the environment or otherwise.  Depending on the nature of the assignment menorah could entail anything, but standard procedure would require a full compliment of security as well as a representative from human resources.  Actually this would have been a perfect protocol to use at Antarctica.....

When I wrote this... "someone" at Human Resources saw it and loved it.  It was approved, but not by Green.  She hated the idea of that much expenditure, so she had it only be applied to certain missions, and its even mention to be considered a breach of cooperate security and buried its actual use under so much red tape to make it virtually useless.  Virtually.

But now the ghost has reappeared and Mohammed is receiving some message from space?  So am I crazy?  No.  Am I being recruited by the Cult of Yah-Weh to preserve the genepool?  A big No.  The likeliest explanation is that this is a very good hacker, Ghost / PaladinOfNature, who can access and route her messages through old satellites to my employees.  Not only can they see my server, you obviously have access to infocorp mail and files, and even possible Bright Future who is apparently watching us.

So let me rephrase my initial salutation:

Dear Ghost,

Tell me... what is that you want?  You have ample knowledge and access to gitch me ten ways from Sunday.  You have only gone through several different routes to convince me that KAT is alive, most being some mysterious poem, cryptic mention of something I have probably left data files on somewhere in the registry, or an equally ridiculous stunt.  Now you toy with one of my employees.  Then get him to tell me all about this protocol... and through this you want me to risk my career and my life by initiating infocorp.protocol.menorah for KAT.  KAT is very likely dead at the bottom of the ocean right now.   I do not wish this.  I do not want this.  But this is the truth as we know it and I cannot waste further resources on the attempt to find his corpse.

So... lets skip this enigmatic formedshit and you can tell me what you want and maybe some proof that you're not some malicious prankster.  And maybe then we can see about that, otherwise....  go bug someone else.

Mohammed,

Your Mental Health Day was approved. I understand your reluctance on the docudrama and what they did to our operation. But this is a tough time. I am putting forth my edits and complaints about the various scene's tomorrow. It will be ignored largely, but if this succeeds we're golden for another few years. I do not want you or anyone else in Project Culture shock forced to go to Antarctica, Africa, or any other Hazard Zone. Hazard assignments are optional, not "optional".

Now This is critical. I need to see the full code behind the message that included "inforcorp.protocol.menorah", including paths, protocols, frequency, and routing information! What else was included with the message from KAT? If this is lagite I need to confirm. If this it not, then someone will be burned 8 times over.

So you understand the gravity, that specific protocol was developed by me 3 years ago specifically for Project Culture Shock's Hazard assignments Level 3 and above. So when I ask where that came from and if I need to initiate protocol.menorah... I telling you that very few people know what that protocol is, nonetheless what it entails, and its no laughing matter. If Falling Star is responsible, then I will deal with this personally and quickly, if not and protocol.menorah needs to be initiated then may Yah-weh watch us all.

Also forward me the messages and the certified triangulation results of your tests, I'll approve the funds for you to certify your results.. This is critical!

Mohammed,

The final cut of the Geocities Docudrama has been uploaded to the registry.  I don't need to say it here what you should expect, but know that Mrs. Green has already seen it and with the exception of a few discretionary changes that may happen, has given her approval with the way it looks.  Needless to say I do want your input before putting forth what changes I will submit, but please understand what little control we have, especially after the Foundation Day Pranks targeted Mrs. Green, that she wants this to go ahead in pristine order.

Have a good foundation day Mohammed.  Also note that the previous optional essay has been made mandatory.  I hope you will enjoy this as much as I will, although I was planning on entering anyway, this will really give our department an opportunity to shine.

Glitch me! That was the most awful experience of my life.  My career really needs this to take off, but there will be a very large part of me that is thankful if it does not.  150 minutes of fame is 100% more fame then more then I want.   Half of this "docudrama" is conjecture and lies.  The other is just plain ridiculous. Adrien says its for the best.  He's a good guy, even if his life is taking the truth and turning into a sack of lies to spoon feed to the masses of unintelligible drones who carry on underneath the noise cloud.

Thats whats "in"... but thats not the truth.  I mean Geocities being founded by a Cult of Cat Worshipers?  I don't doubt that they had a presence in the project, but to go that far... is serious conjecture.  Even though we had that breakthrough on MJ last week.....  doesn't mean they are linked.  Hell I doubt they are even correlated.  Why did I give him access to the files?  Why in Yeh-Way's name did I try to this in the first place?  To get a bigger budget?  Which is worth it I know.  I probably saved my crew from an even worse fate.  But I still felt a part of me die today.

It was so much easier when we just found materials and let Green take the credit to do something ridiculous.  AND WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE THINKING WITH THE BOB MARLEY FORMSHIT!  That in no way ties into anything what-so-ever.  At least Adrien managed to minimize the impact on the story as a whole.  And in reality this will make our department and Project Culture Shock look really good.  If it takes off there will be no way she can hack the budget.  If this takes off I may be easily recognized in the street.... and may even get a promotion.

Glitch me.

GEOCITIES: THE ELECTRONIC FRONTIER

OPENING SCENE

VIDEO SIMULATION - ESTABLISHING
(Clouds soar through a pink sky over a majestic city made of metal, covered with neon lights. A giant statue of Bastet is in the center.)

INFOPICTURES NARRATOR (O.V.)

"It's the year 2000. The Internet is ascending for the first time in an era loaded with decadence, greed and luxury. But scholars have always asked. From whence did this innovation come? Was it science alone that fueled their passion for knowledge and money, or was there a higher power involved?"

(Zoom in on statue)

"Bastet. Egytian goddess of the cats. Protector of the pharaohs. It was said her lick could heal wounds, her scratch could turn a man to dust. And thanks to new findings by InfoCorp researchers, there is reason to believe that great electronic cities, called "Geocities" rose in the early years of the golden age, and the sites constructed in those cities also worshiped mankind's feline friend."

INT. WAREHOUSE 77A-EAST

(It's dark except for a single overhead light in the distance. A man is in the light with his back turned to the camera. The camera slowly zooms in on him.)

"Some men work 9-to-5 every day. They drink their coffee. Sort papers. Adjust their implants nervously, hoping the boss won't see them slacking. Yes, some men do that. But some men labor long hours every day of the week on a quest for discovery."

(Camera, now close to the man, stops zooming in. He dramatically turns around, pulls of his shades with a flick of the wrist, and looks directly into the camera.)

"This is such a man. He is Harold Elijah Liese, InfoCorp. Data Retrieval Manager, and bringing you the facts is his job."

EXT. HAROLD'S CAR IN MOTION

(Harold is in driver's seat, talking to camera in passenger's seat.)

HAROLD LIESE

"Our department made the discovery of a lifetime, and that is the discovery of an Internet organization called "Geocites." Geocities was an enormous part of the Internet in its heydey, and we believe the servers originally had something to do with engineering plans for underground cities. But eventually, that plan changed. And through the HUGE amounts of code we've translated, we're seeing a central theme that cannot be ignored."

SERIES OF SHOTS - CAT IMAGES FROM GEOCITIES

HAROLD LIESE (O.V.)

"Almost everywhere we looked. No matter the source. If it was from Geocities, people were paying tribute to cats."

SHOT - CLOSE IN ON CAT IMAGE WITH EGYPTIAN WRITING ABOVE IT

"And if there's anything about cat worship, it's historically, always, a signal of something stunning - perhaps frightening. Indeed, there is reason to believe that Geocities was founded by an Egyptian Bastet cult.

(sound effect: Lion's roar)

"The same Bastet cult that assassinated classical composer and late 20th-century cultural icon Michael Jackson."

(sound effect: thunderclap - music: "Thriller")

SERIES OF SHOTS FROM FUTURE SCENES

INFOPICTURES NARRATOR (O.V.)

"But that's not all! After these commercial messages..."

(Liese, muted under narration, gesturing and speaking with shades on in the sunlight)

"...we go deep into the history of Bastet, and how Geocities may have functioned as a gathering place for both shamans and assassins alike. Also..."

(Masood, holding picture of Bob Marley)

"...front-lines investigator Mohammed Nouri Masood tells us some of the other shocking revelations found in the ancient Geocities."

MOHAMMED MASOOD

"There is new evidence here that pop music artist Bob Marley not only predicted that hideous deformed people would take over his beloved island of Jamaica, but that he was complicit in making it happen."

Adrien,

Thank again for all the effort you and your team have put in.  I know its been a long road since the first day of filming, but we're almost there!  I must apologize for not getting back those script revisions you wanted, but there are some minor details that are not quite factual.  For example we have no correlation, not to mention proof, that these obsessions with cats actually stem from the ancient Egyptian religion that battled Moses and the ancient Hebrews.  Also do we want to reemphasize the idea that Industries Unlimited may have caused the first Noise Cloud through even as Google from the Japanese Drawing site?  We have some elaborations based on some recent datamines.  For example we are very certain now that these Geocities had were either influenced by or was the influence for the modern clip.  I know we did not intended to broach a very adult subject matter, but this may give the docudrama some appeal.  The last thing is where the prediction of the deformeds by Bob Marley came from....  Was that section suppose to be in this script?  And who is Bob Marley?

The conceptual art sounds great since there seems to be no coherent vision, more like a sputtering of ideas.  Much like the "internet" of the Golden Age there really wasn't any central system or management so much as everyone contributing their ideas and the Geo City, being the whole things put together.  The more we look, the less I am even sure that the whole was even the intent, so much as a byproduct of everyone's contribution.  Although we may not want to get into that for the docudrama, as it is probably an inconsequential distraction..... or would that be conflict?

As for the docudrama as a whole I must admit that I am as much invested as you are, and I wish I haven't been distracted so much by some of the other project finds.  Honestly this needs to go very well.  What else do we need to do to make this an overwhelming success?  Mohammed and I are at your disposal.

Good evening gentlemen,

I'm bringing a graphical artist (Reginald Wayman) with me and Phyllis to visit you on Thursday for the final phase of filming. Once we finish off the bit about cat worship, he's going to design an artist's rendition of the Geo Cities as you and Mo imagine them. We're then going to record Harold reading from the script we transmitted you over the rendition as it's shown.

We need you to be prepared. I'm sorry but I can't emphasize that enough. After all the annoying problems with the lighting in the warehouse and Infinity ruining our old minitransmitter and Green driving my supervisor up the wall with her constant demands about the project, I'm about ready to tear my hair out if this doesn't go well (And you met me last time - you saw I don't have much hair left!) I like to think that you two and I have at least managed to have an amicable professional relationship, so I'm counting on you two to help me get this done right with only a few takes.

So we've managed to decrypt these pictorial evidence. I think this is a fan site to the Japanese animations of the time. The letterings to the side are definitely Japanese characters (or so Hector (HJP-Goju) says, and he worked for Toyota for before coming to InfoCorp). And the pictures at the top seem to be professionally rendered animation. It looks almost like the predecessor of todays clips.

Perhaps this was the origin of clips as we know it? The style seems to be somewhat similar, and we can assume that only fairly knowledgeable adults had the ability to have access to the Geocities. Notice the Title: The Imaginary Darkness. I can only imagine what they are referring to. Probably something scandalous. Also we see very specific wording on the side:

  • horry pottar
  • anirne
  • bonds (perhaps governments bonds?)
  • actors / movies (the less adult themed type things.... maybe more family and children friendly)

  • avatars (maybe 3-D? We know they had virtual worlds even as far back as the turn of the 21st century)
wallpaper (This seems disturbing that they would paper their walls with this sort of materials, but it is the Golden Age, they were far more tolerant of those types of things back then)
  • buttons (Perhaps this Geocity architect had a store? For wallpaper and buttons... I am not quite sure, but with a little more digging I think we can turn this speculation into a story!
  • sequests

The far right seems to be advertisements. Its nice to know that despite the amazing culture of the period, we can also see some of the emergence of the noise cloud. And that we can readily blame Industries Unlimited (Google) for powering it. They really are an evil company, even back then.
